Search Engine Optimization, better known as SEO, consists of the efforts undertaken to improve webpage rankings in search engine results.  Your ultimate goal is to increase web traffic and sales, while maintaining great content.  The higher ranking your website has, the more customers will view your website.  But you need to make sure that your content is relevant and that you keep your viewer’s interest.

SEO efforts may include making changes to your webpages (e.g., adding meta descriptions, labeling images with alt text), connecting your webpages to various social media (e.g., Twitter, Facebook), or purchasing search engine advertising (e.g., Google AdWords).

Companies exist that sell SEO services, but there are also sites that offer free reports.  HubSpot, Inc. has created a handy marketing tool—Website Grader.  Hubspot’s Website Grader scores the effectiveness of your website in a variety of categories, including content, optimize, promote, and convert.

While this tool is not perfect, it’s a great way to start for do-it-yourselfers.  Run the report, make note of what needs to be improved, and get to work.  Depending on your level of programming knowledge and social media savvy, your improvements may require some additional background research.  For example, your Website Grader report may indicate a lack of meta descriptions.  If you’re not familiar with meta descriptions (snippets of HTML code that go in the Head section of a webpage), a little research can tell you how and what to do. There is even web design software that you can use to insert them.
